Lawn Care Basics

How often should I water my lawn?

It's better to water deeply and infrequently than shallowly and often. Aim for 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, usually delivered in one or two sessions. Early morning (4 AM - 8 AM) is the best time to reduce evaporation and prevent fungal diseases.

How short should I cut my grass?

Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade height at one time. For cool-season grasses (like Fescue or Kentucky Bluegrass), maintain a height of 3 to 4 inches. Warm-season grasses (like Bermuda or Zoysia) can be cut shorter, around 1.5 to 2 inches.

When is the best time to fertilize?

This depends on your grass type. Cool-season grasses should be fertilized heavily in the fall and lightly in the spring. Warm-season grasses should be fertilized during their active growing season in late spring and summer.

Why do I have weeds even though I fertilize?

A thick, healthy lawn is the best defense against weeds. If your soil is compacted, cut too short, or improperly watered, weeds will find room to grow. You may also need a pre-emergent herbicide in early spring to stop weed seeds from germinating.

Is it safe to leave grass clippings on the lawn?

Yes! This is called "grasscycling." Clippings break down quickly and return valuable nitrogen and nutrients to the soil, acting as a natural fertilizer. Only bag clippings if the grass is extremely overgrown or diseased.
